Sonablate HIFU What is it?

The Sonablate® 500 is a medical device designed to treat prostate cancer with HIFU energy.

SONABLATE 500 - Features

The Sonablate captures real-time images of the prostate gland, allowing the physician to create a customized treatment plan for each patient. The physician uses the Sonablate to deliver the ultrasound energy to targeted sites, or focal points, throughout the prostate gland.

Sonablate HIFU is a minimally invasive, outpatient treatment choice for prostate cancer that does not involve surgery or radiation. The Sonablate is the only HIFU device for prostate cancer that physicians routinely perform on prostates up to 40cc.

The Sonablate uses a fully integrated probe that both images the prostate and treats it with HIFU. With the Sonablate device, it is possible to completely customize a patient’s treatment plan based on real-time tissue response, tissue density and location of vital structures. The Sonablate creates a 10-12mm lesion, which conforms optimally around vital structures, allowing for complete tissue ablation throughout the gland and decreased risk for untreated tissue remaining.

Rectal wall monitoring to determine temperature of and proximity to the rectal wall. This assists to protect the rectal wall tissue during therapy.

Neurovascular bundle detection, which helps identify and display the position of the nerve bundles that help deliver blood flow to the penis. This software helps to avoid treating the neurovascular bundles, decreasing the risk of erectile dysfunction.

Active cooling system that circulates chilled water through the probe during treatment and monitors temperature, which helps to protect the rectal wall tissue from heat generated during treatment.

Real-time image monitoring, which allows the physician to view and compare the original image to the real-time image being treated, for visual treatment confirmation.

Tissue Change Monitoring Software (TCM)

TCM is a unique software designed for the Sonablate that monitors real-time tissue changes during HIFU therapy for the treatment of malignant and benign prostate disease. TCM provides feedback on the treatment in real-time so that the surgeon knows exactly what is happening to the prostate tissue during HIFU. TCM has the potential to reduce side effects for patients because physicians can tailor the amount of heat used for each individual patient.

How does TCM work?

A radio frequency (RF) signal is sent to a treatment site prior to delivery of HIFU and then another signal is sent after delivery of HIFU in the same treatment site. TCM calculates the change that took place and displays it on-screen. TCM quantifies tissue changes based on a comparison of radio frequency (RF) ultrasound pulse-echo signals at each treatment sites.
